UTI Natural Treatment & Prevention
This article is meant for educational purposes. Before consuming any substance referenced in this post, please do your due diligence and take an informed decision based on a risk vs benefit analysis.
A urinary tract infection (UTI) is an infection in any part of your urinary system — your kidneys, ureters, bladder and urethra.
Luckily, there are a few natural UTI treatment and prevention techniques that work extremely well.
Note: Before proceeding to the natural remedies, if you are experiencing significant burning sensation when urinating – please look into ways to alkalize your urine as much as possible. If it’s an emergency do consider effective urinary alkalizing agents containing ‘Disodium Hydrogen Citrate’ or ‘Potassium Citrate/Citric Acid’ solutions.
Coming back to the root cause from the symptoms – To address the infection, pharmaceutical antibiotics should always be avoided whenever possible as some of them (Eg: Quinolones and Sulfa groups) are known to cause irreversible side effects for a few people.
The natural remedies are considerably safer, do not require a prescription, are generally inexpensive, and are not “pharmaceutical drugs”. Conventional medicine doctors may not know about them, but if you are looking for effective and safe treatment options, definitely consider giving these a shot.
The biggest challenge of today is antibiotic resistant infections. These are typically caused by something known as ‘Biofilms‘.
Even if someone took an anti-microbial that would kill their infection, biofilms can prevent this from happening.
What Are Biofilms?
Biofilm formation occurs when free-floating microorganisms attach themselves to a surface and create a colony.
They secrete materials (extracellular polymers) that provide a structural matrix that adheres to surfaces.
Biofilms Are Resistant to Antibiotics:
Because biofilms protect the bacteria, infections are often more resistant to traditional antimicrobial treatments, making them a serious health risk.
Most, if not all, antibiotics and antiseptics fail to eradicate mature biofilms, and today, the poor efficiency of available antibiotics is a major challenge for the successful treatment of chronic infections.
Biofilm bacteria generally tolerate antibiotic treatment and this is because antibiotics can’t pass through the biofilm enough.
Most people (59%) with chronic sinus infections were found to have a bacterial biofilm, whereas none of the controls (people who didn’t have a sinus infection) had bacterial biofilm .
The most common biofilm that you might be familiar with is the plaque in your teeth.
If you have a chronic infection, you should try specific biofilm disruptors but you need to do it gently to prevent a herxheimer reaction also known as a Die-off reaction or Healing Crisis, when too much of toxins released from the death of microbes (bacteria, fungi etc.) starts to get absorbed in your body at a rate faster than the body can eliminate them.
Urinate at least 5 times a day – Try to spread evenly during waking hours
Lots of water
probiotics, kefir, sauerkraut
For treating the infection:
Things which seems to work almost everytime :
Olive Leaf Extract
Cream of Tartar
Lemongrass essential oil
E-drops nano (oil of juniper, lavender, eucalyptus and pine needle)
Ceylon cinnamon Essential Oil (It is the strongest antimicrobial EO)
QSIs and EPIs:
The reason behind antibiotic resistance using Biofilm is majorly because of Quorum Sensing Mechanisms and Efflux Pumps.
Quorum Sensing is the ability to detect and respond to cell population density by gene regulation.
Drug efflux is a key mechanism of resistance in Gram-negative bacteria. These systems pump solutes out of the cell. Efflux pumps allow the microorganisms to regulate their internal environment by removing toxic substances, including antimicrobial agents, metabolites and quorum sensing signal molecules.
Resistant bacteria may have a greater number of efflux pumps on their cell surfaces. Some bacteria can decrease the specificity of their efflux pumps, increasing the number of different antibiotics the pumps can eliminate.
Quorum sensing inhibition is the process of preventing quorum sensing by disrupting signalling. This is achieved by inactivating signalling enzymes, by introducing molecules that mimic signalling molecules and block their receptors, by degrading signalling molecules themselves, or by a modification of the quorum sensing signals due to an enzyme activity.
BFB 1 and BFB 2 (Quorum Sensing inhibitors):
BFB-1 consists of a proprietary blend of the following essential oils: Piper nigrum(black pepper), Rosmarinus officinalis (rosemary), Syzygium aromaticum l(clove).,and Origanum compactum benth (oregano).
BFB-2 consists of a proprietary blend of the following essential oils: Eucalyptus globules, Citrus reticulata blanco var tangerina (tangerine), Boswellia carterii (Frankinsence), and Thymus vulgaris (Thyme).
Best QSI – Lactonase (No resistance found to be developed yet)
For E-coli biofilm:
Buchanania lanzan Spreng (chironji)
p-Coumaric acid [eg: cinnamon]
Sinensetin (eg: found in orange oil)
Sweet orange seeds
f Berberi saristata and Camellia sinensis
Efflux Pump Inhibitors (EPIs) for E-coli:
Baicalein (eg: found in thyme)
Lysergol (Eg: Ipomoea muricata)
Eucalyptus tereticornis (broad action)
Momordica balsamina (Karela)
Gallotannin (Eg: Terminalia chebula)
Arylpiperidine ( due to serotonin re-uptake inhibitor property of arylpiperazines, these compounds are likely to be toxic to mammalian cells)
Diadzein (less evidence
For Candida: Farnesol [citronella, neroli, cyclamen, lemon grass, tuberose, rose,]
Other treatment options include:
coriander seeds, andrographis
Apple Cider Vinegar
Olive leaf extract (tincture or capsules), with turmeric capsules. Turmeric happens to be a biofilm disruptor. Olive leaf is a very broad spectrum herbal antibiotic, probably one of the most potent there is.
Lots of Lemon Juice
For Biofilms, use biofilm disruptors like:
1.Biofilm Defense from Kirkman
2.Apolactoferrin (or lactoferrin)
4.Lauricidin (Non E-Coli)
5.Nattokinase(Can lead to blood clotting issue)
To prevent Herx reaction:
Use Activated Charcoal 1.5 hours after consuming any antibiotic.
Consider addition of Chlorella if required.
Don’t use too much of the biofilm disruptors at a time
Go Slow (try starting with 1/4th dose)
Don’t combine multiple antibacterials
Don’t go for a course of more than 2 weeks at a stretch
Regularly Eliminate the toxins
